Arbain Nawawi or Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah (Arabic: الأربعون النوية) is a book that contains forty-two selected hadiths composed by Imam Nawawi [1]. Arba'in means forty but actually there are forty -two hadiths contained in this book. This book together with the book of Riyadhus Shalihin is considered the most famous and accepted work of Muslim Imam Nawawi around the world.

Background

It has become a habit for the scholars to make a collection of collections or summaries about a religious problem. So that in fact Imam Nawawi is not the first and is also not the only one that makes the book of Arbain. But the Arbain Book is well-known and fragrant until now, leaving other Arbain books compiled by other scholars. Among the arbain books belonged to priests such as Al-Ajurri, Al-Baihaqi, Ash-Shabuni, Al-Hakim, Ad-Daruquthni, Ath-Thabari, As-Suyuthi, Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani and besides those who number up to dozens of Arbain books. So as to distinguish from other arbain books, it is called the name al-arba'in an-nawawiyah (Arbain Book of Imam An-Nawawi) [2].

The basis of this book is the book "Al-Ahadits Al-Kulliyah" who is dictated by Imam Al-Hafizh Abu Amr bin Ash-Shalah, which is a collection of 26 dense and concise hadiths. Then Imam Nawawi fulfilled it to 42 hadiths and named it al-arba'in [3].

Imam Nawawi really chose the hadith that became the foundation of Islam in compiling his Arba'in book. Hadith 2: Jibril hadith which contains the pillars of Islam, pillars of faith and pillars of ihsan; 6th hadith: about halal, haram, and doubtful; and 9th hadith: Working orders according to ability. There are several reasons that show the importance of the position of the Book of Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah:

Includes most of the affairs and needs of Muslims in the world and in the hereafter both from aqeedah, law, sharia, muamalah and akhlaq.

Is a collection of the hadiths of the chosen prophet, and is Jawami'ul Kalim which has the virtue in a short and concise discussion.

The hadiths are a unity that is the scope of Islamic teachings, either half, or one third or a quarter [4].

Widely used by scholars to teach Muslims and even become the main backrest in providing understanding of Islamic teachings so that some scholars concentrate with these hadiths and then reap more in detail.
