Reiki derives from the pronunciation of two Japanese ideograms: rei which means universal energy and ki individual vital energy.

The term reiki master is a source of the biggest confusion for new, or potential, reiki students

Do you put, to a number of Reiki practitioners, the question: "What is a Reiki Master?" And probably the most common answer you will get will be something of this type: "Someone who has received activation at the Master level of Reiki"

However, Takata-Sensei said that, in order for a person to be considered a master Reiki, it is not enough that he has received activation at the master level and knows how to pass the activations to the other three levels; At least, he must have a class and have already activated, at least, a student.

With reference to Reiki, the Japanese term: Sensei who is translated - in a very approximate way - as "Master", does not refer to one who knows Reiki's art in depth (not even to one who has reached some form of a higher level in that matter, although many of us have thought this!)

The word sensei is, in reality, a term of respect, which means, first of all, "teacher" and refers to someone who is part of a teacher relationship - student (mentor - student). Translating: Sensei as 'Master' is, to say it simply, how to refer to a "elementary school teacher" calling him "professor". And just as happens in the case of the professor, ideally a Reiki Master is someone who (having received the relative activations) has a good knowledge of the topics, has a strong desire to help their students develop their potentials, has respect for his students, (like how he knows how to deserve respect for his students) and also has the ability to inspire his students and to draw the best of them ...
